In the field of science and technology, Thales is supporting Romania’s contribution to the European laser research project ELI-NP (Extreme Light Infrastructure-Nuclear Physics).

The company is providing Romania’s nuclear physics institute (IFIN-HH) with an ultra high-power laser system delivering 2x10 PetaWatts (20 million billion watts) of power.

This is more powerful than any other laser system to date, including the PetaWatt systems previously installed by Thales.

On the ELI-NP project, Thales is not only responsible for the turnkey development and supply of a complex scientific instrument delivering unprecedented levels of power, but will train Romanian engineers and technicians to install, maintain and operate the system for Worldwide research programs.


Mission of the job

In this context you will be located in the Bucharest area where you will have to lead a team of four to 12 engineers in charge of the technical deployment and operation of the laser system.

You will have to follow the activities and tasks defined together with the management team located in France (master schedule, visual management, etc.

and to steadily report on the progress status. You will have the responsibility to manage the logistic flow of the spare parts available on site and to organize the repair flow when failures occur, in order to grant to the Customer a high level of operability of the system.

You will be the main point of contact of the Customer for the daily operation scheduled on site and be in interface with the local Thales management.

Job summary

  • Full team management :
  • Weekly Action plan definition for the maintenance / operation team on site;
  • Definition with the team members of their Personal Professional Development Plan;
  • Training planning to raise the member technical skills;
  • Cross training of the team members to ensure continuity in the skills;
  • To schedule, assign and follow activities (planning tools : MSP, iObeya) in agreement with Thales LAS management team;
  • To use the implemented tools to manage and report the daily activities :
  • Project Dashboard (Chorus 2.0);
  • Thanks to the CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) tool
  • Logistic flow (spare parts, repair) to track;
  • Technical facts to report, log and track from the event to the implementation of the corrective solution;
  • In relation with the management and technical team in France, implement and enforce procedures for rigorous system performance tracking and health check to maximize system availability and identify preventive maintenance activities;
  • To interface with the Customer team for scheduling training and / or operations sessions;
  • When the system is in operation, scheduling and managing the experimental campaigns according to the agreed customer experimental yearly planning;
  • Full maintenance and operation management of the HPLS and LBTS, including spare parts stock management;
  • Parts procurement using Thales Romania logistic as well as Thales LAS one, flow management;
  • Cost control to stay in budget;
  • Development of the maintenance hub in Romania for the laser sector customer support worldwide activity.
  • Education

  • Bachelor degree in a related field (physics, lasers / optics engineering, laser applications, optoelectronics / electronics, etc.
  • or with knowledge gained through working with lasers would be appreciated.

    What is required

  • Capacity to manage a local team, to implement and to teach methodology in the daily activities;
  • Training session for the Customer team to schedule and organize with the local Thales team;
  • Coordination of the Customer laser experiments : to interface with the Customer needs in term of laser availability for experiments campaign and to grant the availability of the laser system at the requested period;
  • Country context to understand;
  • No restriction to work with high energy laser beam;
  • For the long term and when the site will be in operation, radiation safety rules to know and follow if any.

  • Fluency in English; French is optional.
