Position Summary

Under the direction of the Security Supervisor, is responsible for providing a safe and secure campus environment for students, staff, faculty and visitors.

Essential Job Functions

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.

Provides campus security to ensure the safety of all students, faculty, staff, visitors, and property of the College and responds to the needs and requirements of students, faculty, staff and visitors.

Proactively promotes safety and security by demonstrating, communicating and delivering services through daily interactions.

Provides both foot and vehicle security / safety patrols in order to minimize and deter the occurrence of crime, and serves the interests of the College while generating positive security awareness and relationship building.

Ensures that College policies and procedures related to safety and security are followed.

Effectively provides security for all College assets, including building and property security.

Enforces campus parking regulations as directed.

Investigates, prepares reports, and files safety deficiencies, personal accidents / injuries, and crime and security incidents.

Escorts College staff with cash deposits on campus or to the local bank.

In an emergency situation, enforces College procedures and directs local fire, medical, or law enforcement to the scene.

Upon notification of an emergency, responds immediately and proceeds directly to the site; ascertains the nature of the emergency / injury, rendering first aid as priorities dictate.

Stores and maintains a log of all items found or turned in as lost property.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements include the following :

High school diploma. An Associate’s degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, or related field preferred.

Ten or more years of experience in law enforcement, criminal justice or security enforcement, required.

Michigan Vehicle Operator’s License.

Concealed Pistol License

Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of modern security enforcement.

Knowledge of department procedures and polices.

Skill in maintaining and updating records and related systems, documenting incidents, recording information, and preparing comprehensive and accurate reports.

Ability to give a high level of human interaction skills and proper application to deal pleasantly, efficiently and courteously with the public, and exercise a high degree of diplomacy in contentious or confrontational situations.

The ability to defuse contentious situations with verbal and non-verbal communication.

Ability to understand instructions and follow detailed procedures consistently.

Skill in the use of office equipment and technology, including computers and related software, such as word processing, and the ability to master new technologies.

Skill in the operation of security vehicles and communication equipment.

Ability to work shifts of varying lengths and different times of the day, including weekends and evenings as assigned.

Ability to effectively communicate ideas and concepts orally and in writing.

Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative, and resourcefulness when dealing with staff, students, faculty, the public, and other professional contacts.

Ability to critically assess situations, maintain attention to detail, solve problems, work efficiently under stress, within deadlines, and changing work priorities.
