Winnow was founded in London in 2013 to help the hospitality industry prevent food waste through internet of things tools in the kitchen.

We have worked with hundreds of sites and are operating in over 30 countries around the world supported by our offices in London, Dubai, Shanghai, Singapore, Romania and North America.

We are a rapidly growing company with a strong base of clients who are rolling out our system globally. We have blue-chip customers including Accor Hotels, IKEA, IHG, Marriott, Compass Group and many others.

Winnows clients on average reduce waste by over 50% by value and sustain savings. Winnow has now worked with hundreds of sites to reduce food waste, including hotels, universities and schools, staff restaurants, event / hospitality kitchens, buffets, pubs, and high street restaurants.

Where the system is permanently adopted, pre-consumer waste value is reduced by 50% - 70% with no detrimental impact to the perceived quality or value of the offer to their customers.

This represents a typical improvement of food cost savings of 3% to 8%, commonly a 40%+ increase in profitability for operations.

Winnow Vision, our new artificial intelligence-based technology, is trained to automatically track all food waste thrown away.

The team :

The Data team plays a critical role in the continuous improvement of our flagship product - Winnow Vision. We've collected millions of images of food items already, and keep collecting thousands every day from the kitchens we operate in.

Those images need to be processed, curated and structured to optimise the quality and accuracy of our AI models. Managing this big data pipeline is no easy task : we operate across the world, in a wide variety of industries and our model needs to recognize food ranging from the Malay Nasi Goreng to the American fried chicken, and everything else in between.

We have come a long way - from long data collection time and training small AI models for very specific clients, we have now managed to generalise our approach and can now deploy AI models to almost any kitchen in the world in a matter of a couple of weeks.

However, there are still many challenges ahead - today we present a top selection of items to our clients and they confirm the right one - our ambition is to become completely touch less.

How can we make our models more confident and more accurate, that is the question!

The Data & Analytics team consists of 7 people (4 in Cluj and 3 in London) and is expected to continue to grow in the coming months.

Roles range from data operation executives to data scientists.

About the role :

As the Data Operations Manager, you will be reporting to the Data & Analytics Director, and you will be managing a team of data operation executives located in Cluj.

Data operations executives are responsible for :

  • Configuring our client's menus (ensuring they contain the right food items, and that they are correctly mapped to our food taxonomy)
  • Monitoring incoming images and updating menus to ensure they represent accurately what our clients are wasting
  • Adapting the way menus are mapped to our food taxonomy so as to optimise the way our model performs for each of them
  • Curate, structure and clean new data that we can use to train better models
  • These tasks make up for a busy schedule, that needs to be adapted based on activity level and priorities.

    Key responsibilities :

    Some of your key responsibilities will include :

  • Define and manage priorities for your team, avoiding any bottlenecks
  • Monitor and manage the existing fleet of models in the field, and ensure new clients benefit from AI no less than 1 month after installation
  • Review and improve existing processes to optimise efficiency and quality of your team's work
  • Standardise best practices across the team
  • Analyse and report on high level situation to the Data & Analytics Director, proposing solutions for incoming challenges
  • Manage, mentor and grow your team members to be the best version of themselves
  • From October 2021, Winnow is adopting a hybrid working model where employees will have 2 days working from home and 3 days will be working in the office.

    This subject to regional COVID conditions so is subject to change.

    Education and experience

  • You are likely to be degree educated and will have an interest in data
  • You will have prior experience in managing people
  • You have an advanced working knowledge of Excel
