Job overview :

  • FHI 360 is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Gender and Media Specialist for Fiovana, for Fiovana, a USAID-funded nutrition and food security program in Madagascar and managed by the Adventist Development and Relief Agency ( ADRA).
  • FHI 360 is an ADRA sub-recipient of this USAID funding. It is anticipated that this position will exist for the duration of the project (5 years) and will be based in Manakara.

  • Fiovana, which means change in Malagasy, aims to sustainably improve food and nutritional security and the resilience of vulnerable populations in the regions of Atsimo Atsinanana and Vatovavy-Fitovinany.
  • The program will operate in three interrelated areas of change :

  • Sustainable improvement in the health and nutritional status of women of reproductive age (WRA), adolescent girls and children under 5 (CU5);
  • Household income is sufficient to access basic food and non-food items and to accumulate savings; and Improving the management of social and ecological risks.

  • Social and behavioral change (CSC) and local capacity building reinforce each other in all of these areas, providing the building blocks for lasting impact.
  • Two primary responsibilities of the Gender and Media Specialist will be to support :
  • Partners, staff, the government of Madagascar and communities to improve gender equality and social inclusion within communities ;
  • A solid media component of the Social and Behavioral Change (CSC) strategy that reinforces key actions, collects testimonials from early adherents and exceptional community members and pushes Fiovana community activities towards greater impact.
  • Main responsibilities :

    The Gender and Media Specialist will be primarily responsible for the following :

  • The implementation of gender transformation and synchronization activities to create an environment conducive to improving project results, such as training of community health workers, civil society and staff of local NGOs, social and behavioral change activities, and community mobilization.
  • Ensure that each component of the program is designed to :
  • promote gender equality and social inclusion
  • eliminate gender disparities and promote gender equality
  • promote the rights of girls and women to quality health care and full participation in social, economic and civic activities
  • promote the status of women and girls, their decision-making power and their opportunities; and involving men and boys in health care behavior research.
  • Design a participatory media strategy that includes :
  • Radio announcements that highlight the stories of the first members.
  • Coverage of outstanding local leaders, agricultural and health workers, health and wellness advisors and local producers.
  • Promotion of specific behaviors linked to the reduction of chronic malnutrition.
  • Use of social media, if applicable.
  • Work with the local partner, Fiantso, to train media stakeholders - especially local radio stations - to disseminate information on the human rights-based approach to development.
  • Ensure that the media strategy uses a combination of local radio stations so as to be as cost effective as possible.
  • Supervise all media consultants to ensure high quality work.
  • Collaborate on the programmatic and technical aspects of all program components to ensure that the media are used equitably to showcase and promote activities in all areas of the project.
  • Minimum requirements :

  • Bachelor's degree or its international equivalent in relevant technical fields, such as gender studies, communication, rural development, sociology or social sciences.
  • At least five (5) years of progressively increasing technical responsibilities in relevant technical fields.
  • In-depth understanding of the programmatic and technical aspects of gender development strategies and activities.
  • Demonstrated understanding of a range of effective media and community approaches.
  • Demonstrated animation skills.
  • Experience with international projects funded by donors.
